A group of 23 Indian nationals, together with two fishing trawlers were seized by the Sri Lanka Navy in Jaffna on Saturday night (03 Feb.).

According to the navy, the apprehended individuals had been poaching in northern waters off the Delft Island in Jaffna.

In continuation of the regular patrols and operations conducted by the Navy to curb illegal fishing practices by foreign fishing trawlers, the Northern Naval Command, on Saturday night, deployed Fast Attack Craft belonging to the Navy and Sri Lanka Coast Guard to chase away a cluster of Indian poaching trawlers, as the trawlers were detected engaging in illegal fishing.

As such, the arrested fishermen, together with the trawlers, were brought to the Kankasanthurai Harbour and are due to be handed over to the Mailadi Fisheries Inspector for onward legal action.
