Special commodity levy on rice and onions slashed

The government has reduced the special commodity levy on imported onions and rice has been reduced with effect from today (March 27).

Thereby, the Special Commodity Levy of Rs. 65 per 1kg of rice has been dropped to Rs. 1. This will be in place until April 03, 2024.

The President also ordered that the tax levied from imported other onions (Rose Onions) be slashed to Rs. 10 per kilogram until April 30, 2024. 

The order was issued by President Ranil Wickremesinghe, pursuant to the powers vested in him under the Special Commodity Levy Act, No. 48 of 2007.
