Order under VAT Act passed by majority in parliament

The Order under the Value Added Tax Act, in relation to increasing the VAT from 15% to 18%, was passed in Parliament today (02) by a majority of 36 votes.

During the vote held this evening, after the opposition had asked for a division, a total of 55 Members of Parliament voted in favor of the order and 19 voted against it.

The Parliament was subsequently adjourned until April 24, 2024. 

Meanwhile, the Second Reading of the Banking (Amendment) Bill was followed by the Committee Stage and Third Reading, which was passed in parliament today without amendments and without a vote.
