Advisory issued for low pressure area over southwest Bay of Bengal

February 22, 2026   01:43 pm

The atmospheric disturbance that prevailed over the Bay of Bengal has developed into a low pressure area and is currently located to the northeast of Sri Lanka, the Department of Meteorology stated.

Under the influence of the system, heavy showers or thundershowers, strong wind gusts of about 50-60kmph, may occur in seas off the eastern coast.

Accordingly, navel and fishing communities have been requested to be attentive to future forecasts and bulletins issued by the Department of Meteorology in this regard.

Meanwhile, several spells of showers will occur in the Northern, North-central and North-western provinces and in Trincomalee district.

Showers or thundershowers are likely at a few places in the Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Kalutara, Galle and Matara districts after 2.00 p.m. Fairly heavy falls above 50 mm are likely at some places in these areas.

The general public has been requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
