Six Sri Lankan fishermen who were held in Bangladeshi custody for six months have been released by the government of Bangladesh.
According to the Ministry of Fisheries, the fishermen are scheduled to return to Sri Lanka tomorrow morning (April 2).
The group had set sail on July 16, 2025, aboard the multi-day fishing vessel ‘Sudu Duwa 4’ and were subsequently apprehended by the Bangladesh Navy on charges of violating maritime boundaries.
Following their arrest, the fishermen were detained at the Chittagong central jail in Bangladesh while legal proceedings were conducted.
The Ministry of Fisheries further stated that the release was made possible through successful diplomatic interventions coordinated by the Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Sri Lankan High Commission in Bangladesh.
