Seven police officers injured in wasp attack during raid in Kotmale

Seven police officers attached to the Kotmale Police Station were injured in a wasp attack while conducting a raid on an illicit liquor distillery operating within a forest reserve in the Ramboda area of Wedamulla, Kotmale, today (01).
Police stated that while trekking through the reserve during the operation, a wasp nest on a tree was disturbed due to extremely dry weather conditions, resulting in seven police officers, including the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Kotmale Crimes Investigation Division, being attacked by the swarm of wasps.
The OIC of the Kotmale Police, Indika Lalith, confirmed that the officers sustained injuries due to wasp stings.
Following the incident, two “1990 Suwa Seriya” ambulances were dispatched to the vicinity of the forest reserve, and two of the seven injured officers were admitted to the Kotmale Regional Hospital.
The OIC further stated that five officers in critical condition were admitted to the Nuwara Eliya District General Hospital.
Meanwhile, a hospital official in Nuwara Eliya stated that the condition of three of the injured officers remains critical.
