Excise revenue surpasses first quarter target

The Excise Department of Sri Lanka has reported a record performance in revenue collection during the first quarter of 2026, exceeding its projected target and registering notable year-on-year growth.
According to official figures, excise revenue as at March 31, 2026, reached Rs. 70.4 billion, surpassing the quarterly target of Rs. 61.95 billion. This represents an achievement of 113.6% against the set target, the Department noted.
When compared with the corresponding period in 2025, the Department recorded a 114.8% increase in revenue, indicating a significant upward trend in collections.
Excise Commissioner General M. B. N. A. Pemarathna stated that the performance reflects strengthened enforcement measures, improved compliance and enhanced operational efficiency across the department.
He further noted that coordinated efforts under government policy guidance, along with intensified field operations, contributed to the improved revenue performance.
Among the key measures cited were stricter monitoring of liquor manufacturing plants and distilleries, the implementation of security seals on bottled alcohol, increased raids targeting illicit alcohol production and regular inspections of licensed premises.
The Excise Department, which ranks as the third-largest revenue-generating institution in the country, has set an ambitious annual target of Rs. 245 billion for 2026 and expects to maintain the current growth momentum in the coming quarters, the Department said in a statement.
