The south-west monsoon is gradually getting established over the island, the Department of Meteorology has stated.

Accordingly, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts today (20).

Fairly heavy falls above 50 mm are likely at some places in the above areas, the Met. Department noted.

Several spells of showers will occur in the Northern province and in the Anuradhapura and Hambantota districts.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Uva province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa district after 2.00 p.m.

Fairly strong winds of about 30-40kmph can be expected at times over the Western slopes of the central hills, Northern, North-central, North-western and Southern provinces.

The general public has been requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
