The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has staged a protest, since this morning, in front of the Hultsdorf Court complex, calling for the immediate resignation of Chief Justice Mohan Peiris.

Senior Counsel Gunaratne Wanninayake told Ada Derana that the Chief Justice should immediately resign from his post and expressed concerns over allegations that the CJ of had been present at the former President’s house on 9 January, while the results of the Presidential polls were being released. Wanninayake also added that Mohan Peiris’ appointment was illegal.

At a press conference held yesterdays, BASL president Upul Jayasuriya also said that the association has unanimously decided to re-elect impeached Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake for the CJ post. Jayasuriya expressed that the impeachment of former CJ was unconstitutional.
