A 50-year-old person in Balapitiya today attempted to commit suicide over reports that Parliamentarian Sajin Vass Gunawardena is about to join the ruling party, however, the attempt was prevented  by a call made by former President Chandrika Bandaranaike, Ada Derana reporter said.

The individual had climbed on the top of a multi-story building and threatened to self immolate, if the Parliamentarian joins the government.

In the meantime, a group of people accompanied by the United National Party (UNP) Balapitiya organizer Kamal Jayantha too staged a protest, in support of the person’s appeal, close approximate to the building where the strike had been launched.

However, the person later called off his strike and got down from the building when he received the call from the former President promising that the new government would not seek the backing of Gunawardena.

Gunawardena came to spotlight recently, after diplomat Sri Lankan High Commissioner for the UK Dr. Chris Nonis resigned from his post due to an alleged assaulting incident at a function during the former President’s New York visit.
