Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa today said that not only politicians but even their wives and children have to be safeguarded from the government now as they are being “harassed” one by one.

He was referring to the recent arrest of former Minister Wimal Weerawansa’s wife Shashi Weerawansa on charges of falsifying documents to obtain a diplomatic passport.

Speaking to reporters after visiting Mrs. Weerawansa at the Colombo National Hospital, Rajapaksa said he believes “this is not good” and that “this hateful politics should end.”

“I believe that it’s wrong to do such things to extract revenge from politicians,” he said. “I didn’t do that. No one can point their finger at me. So I can point my finger at anyone.”
