President Maithripala Sirisena has been appointed as the Chairman of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA), a party source said on Sunday (15).

The Central Committee of the UPFA unanimously decided to appoint President Sirisena as its leader at a meeting held last afternoon (14).

Former Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon has been appointed as the party organiser. Former Minister Susil Premajayantha and Anura Priyadarshana Yapa will continue to work in their current positions.

President Sirisena was appointed as the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, after former President Mahinda Rajapaksa agreed to handover the party’s leadership to his successor on 16 January.
