A Police Constable (PC) who allegedly attempted to open fire at the Venerable Wanawasi Rahula Thero, founder of the Jathika Namal Uyana, has been arrested by Galkiriyagama Police.

The police officer in question had attempted to shoot the Buddhist monk using a T56 rifle at around 7.00pm last night.

Rahula Thero says that the police officer, who has been assigned to duty at the Namal Uyana, was scheduled to report to work at 6.00pm, however he had arrived only at around 6.45pm.

When the Thero had inquired from him regarding this, the police officer had become agitated and allegedly attempted to shoot the monk with his service rifle.

Ven. Rahula Thero also claims that following the incident the police officer had also threatened to kill him and verbally abused him using foul language.

The Thero had later notified the police regarding the incident and officers attached to the Galkiriyagama Police had arrested the suspect in question.

He is to be produced at the Kekirawa Magistrate’s Court.
