Minority parties didn’t raise their voices properly - Rajitha

Cabinet Spokesman and Health Minister Dr Rajitha Senaratna says that a final decision will be reached regarding the 20th Amendment to the Constitution, introducing electoral reforms, at the special cabinet meeting to be held on Friday (12).  

With regard to objections voiced by certain minority parties towards the electoral reforms proposed by the Prime Minister, he stated that the decision on the proposal was not final yet and that it was brought by the United National Party (UNP) to do justice to those parties.  

“This is not final yet. There will be another special cabinet meeting on the 20th amendment on Friday.”

“So the minority parties they again talk about the number (of seats). But that day they didn’t raise their voices properly,” he charged, speaking at the cabinet media briefing today (11).

The Cabinet on Monday (08) granted approval for a proposal put forward by the Prime Minister to elect 125 MPs from First-Past-the Post (FPP) system, 75 from Proportional Representation (PR) system and the remaining 25 members from the National List.

Responding to questions from reporters, Dr Senaratna further said that the Parliament would not be dissolved in the very near future and that it would only happen after the 20th amendment is passed in Parliament.
