Maithripala Sirisena is the only President who stepped forward to take efforts in a bid to abolish the Executive Presidency, Special Projects Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama says.

The observation was made at a press conference held in Colombo this afternoon (20).

He pointed out that though all the Presidents who came to power since the origin of Executive Presidency vowed to abolish it, only President Sirisena took practical steps in this regard.

Minister Amunugama also went on to say that the Government would consider the proposals and recommendations of the Joint Opposition when drafting the new Constitution.

The Minister, while expressing his views regarding the ‘Theravada Bhikkhu Dialogue’ presented to the Parliament, said that the decision to introduce the act was taken following a request made by the Sanaga Nayaka thero of the Tri Nikayas.

Minister Amunugama also pointed out the importance of introducing the new act without any delay.
