Police teams today searched a block of land allegedly belonging to the wife of Major Neville Wanniarachchi, who was former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s chief security officer.

Speaking to Ada Derana, Wanniarachchi said that excavations were carried out using backhoes near a cemetery where his wife’s father has been laid to rest in Attanayala, Weeraketiya.

The excavations were carried out under the security of Police Special Task Force (STF) personnel and police officers at around 10.00am this morning, Ada Derana reporter said.

According to police sources, the excavations were carried out for the purpose of unearthing gold and currency suspected to have been buried at the property.

Two big holes were dug up at the location by 3.00pm today, however none of the aforementioned valuables were found inside any of them, sources disclosed.

Ada Derana reporter said that the excavating halted by around 4.00pm at the land which had been used for coconut cultivation. He said that several residents of the area had gathered near the location to witness the digging.

It is reported that the digging was carried out according to a court order obtained by the Police Financial Crimes Investigations Division (FCID).
