Cabinet green-lights two elevated highways to Colombo

The Cabinet of Ministers today approved the proposal for the construction of two elevated highways, aimed at reducing the traffic congestion within the city of Colombo, the Ministry of Higher Education and Highways said.

One elevated highway, with a distance of 6.9km and consisting of 4 lanes, will be constructed from the Kelaniya Bridge to Rajagiriya while it will connect to Battaramulla, Malabe, Athurugiriya and the Outer Circular Expressway.

The second elevated highway, with a distance of 5.8km, will be constructed from Kelaniya Bridge to Colombo Port entrance. 

The projects will be funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Japanese, the ministry said in a statement.
