The Police Department has launched special operations, under the direct supervision of Senior DIG Western Province Pujith Jayasundara, since this morning to eradicate underworld groups which are rapidly raising their heads and spreading violence in the country.
Accordingly, a total of 102 mobile roadblocks have been placed within the Colombo police division to search individuals and vehicles. These activities will be limited to around 3 hours while a report is to be submitted to the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police at the end of each operation.
In addition to this steps have also been taken to establish 10 mobile units for the 10 police areas in Colombo. A team comprising 8 police officers will be selected for this while it will carry out duties under the supervision of the ASPs in charge of respective areas.
The Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs), who will be supervising the said mobile units, will also be able to call in the Police Special Task Force (STF) at the event of any incident.
A series of shooting incidents and murders had been reported within Colombo and surrounding areas in the past couple of days while information has been uncovered that certain underworld figures were connected to these incidents.
Therefore the Police Department suspects that underworld groups which were dormant for a long period have recommenced their activities.
However, Senior DIG Pujith Jayasundara told Ada Derana that the underworld will not be allowed to raise its head once again in the country.
