A suspect who attempted to break into a shop at Depanama on the Borella-Kottawa road was wounded and hospitalised after being shot by a police officer.

The incident had occurred at around 2.15am today when officers from Maharagama Police on mobile patrol had seen the individual attempting to enter the shop in a suspicious manner.

When the Maharagma Police Crimes OIC, who was among the group of officers, had confronted the suspect the latter had allegedly attempted to attack the policeman with a broken bottle, prompting the OIC to shoot the suspect below his knee.

The wounded man was admitted to the Kalubowila Hospital by the same police officers.

Maharagama Police is conducting an investigation.
