Homagama court unrest: seven more get bail

Seven persons including five Buddhist monks, who were arrested and remanded for unruly behavior outside the Homagama Magistrate’s Court, have been granted bail by the court.


The monks and two women were produced before the court when the case was taken up today while Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake ordered that they each be released on a personal bail of Rs. 100,000, Ada Derana reporter said. The Magistrate has too ordered the monks to appear at the Homagama police on every Sundays until the case is resolved.  


They were accused of rioting outside the Magistrate’s Court on January 26 when the chief of Bodu Bala Sena (BBS), Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thero was remanded for contempt of court and threatening the wife of missing journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda. 


Earlier, eleven including the General Secretary of the Ravana Balaya, Venerable Ittekande Saddhatissa Thero, President of the Sinhala Ravaya, Venerable Akmeemana Dayarathana Thero, Ven. Biyagama Suseema Thero, Ven Pitigala Dhamma Vineetha Thero, Ven. Matuwagala Dhammasiri and Kirama Devinda Thero and five laypersons were granted bail as well.
