Venerable Uduwe Dhammaloka Thero, who was indicted for the alleged illegal possession of an elephant calf, has been granted bail by the Colombo High Court today (20).

The Thero was released on two personal bails of Rs. 10 million each and a cash bail imposed on by the Magistrate earlier, Ada Derana reporter said.

The Attorney General filed indictment against Dhammaloka Thero for the possession of the elephant calf without a valid permit on 11 May.

The Thero, who was arrested and subsequently remanded, was granted bail by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court earlier as well.

Dhammaloka Thero of Alan Mathiniyaramaya Temple in Polhengoda has however categorically denied allegations leveled against him with regard to the two and half year-old elephant calf found kept inside the temple premises and has maintained that the elephant had been abandoned at the temple following a pageant held in 2014.
