A Cabinet paper will be submitted to increase tax on tobacco to 90 per cent, Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne says.

The observation was made at the unveiling of the National Policy on Tobacco and Alcohol which was held at the BMICH under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena this morning (04).

The Minister also said that steps will be taken to freeze the Value Added Tax (VAT) on tobacco at 15 per cent.

“This has also done during the term of late President R. Premadasa. Tax on tobacco was 90 per cent that time as well,” he added.
