Gammanpila responds to PM’s remarks

If new Acts were introduced by the former government out of procedure, responsibility for that should be taken by the United National Party (UNP) as the then opposition, Pivithuru Hela Urumaya leader Udaya Gammanpila says.

The observation was made while speaking at a press conference held in Colombo this afternoon (10).

In respond to a remark by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe made yesterday, Gammanpila held the UNP responsible for not doing ‘enough’ as the then opposition to halt such moves.

He also slammed the government for not seeking Cabinet approval for the proposed Value Added Tax (VAT) bill. “According to the Article 152 of the Constitution, an approval from the Cabinet of Ministers is a must before it brought to Parliament,” he added.

He also went on to say that the then opposition was unwilling to work for the sake of the people. “The same happens with the present opposition leader. That is why we had to takeover the role of the opposition,” Gammanpila told reporters.
