A proposal to build a bridge connecting India and Sri Lanka was also proposed in the “National Physical Guidelines 2011” which was prepared by the Ministry of former Minister Wimal Weerawansa, UNP MP Edward Gunasekara says.
The observation was made while speaking at a press conference held in Colombo this morning (30).
“This book was prepared when Wimal Weerawansa was the Housing Minister. There were proposals to get contribution from the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka and Road Development Authority for the project as well,” he added.
However, Minister Lakshman Kiriella has denied the opposition contention that government has agreed to an Indian proposal to construct a bridge across the Palk Strait from Thalaimannar to Rameswaram. Kiriella charged that the opposition is trying to exploit one issue after the other to discredit the government.
