A woman was killed while another 12 persons were injured after an elephant went on a rampage before the Perahera (procession) of the Maha Saman Devalaya in Ratnapura last night.

Police said that the wounded persons have been admitted to the Ratnapura Hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile at least four persons including two women were injured after a false rumour regarding a rampaging elephant triggered a minor human stampede during the annual procession of the Getabaru Rajamaha Viharaya last night.

The injured were rushed to the Deniyaya Hospital following the incident which occurred shortly after the Perahera commenced.
