MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage, who was arrested and remanded on money laundering charges, has been released on bail by the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court a short while ago, the Ada Derana reporter confirmed.
Colombo Chief Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya ordered that he be released on a cash bail of Rs 50,000 and four personal bails of Rs 10 million each.
Aluthgamage, who was the former Sports Minister, was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on September 15 on charges under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act after a statement was recorded from him the same day.
The CID is investigating a complaint lodged against him by Wasantha Samarasinghe, the Convenor of the Voice Against Corruption Movement, accusing the former Sports Minister of purchasing a house on Kynsey Road in Colombo by spending a sum of Rs 27 million from money earned through unlawful means.
The CID states that the aforementioned payment was made through his account in a bank branch located at the Parliament Complex and that another sum of Rs 10 million had been earned through illegal means.
