The Joint Opposition on Wednesday urged the government not to increase the proposed 15% Value Added Tax (VAT) hike.

MP Bandula Gunawardena made the observation while speaking at a press conference held in Colombo this afternoon (19).

He also pointed out that as the VAT remains at 11% at the moment, the public should be reimbursed for the additional amount they actually spent on the tax since May 2.

“I’ve also written a book with over 1000 pages against the decision to increase the VAT,” he added.

Gunawardena pointed out that the debate on the Value Added Tax (amendment) bill is also scheduled to be held next week.
