Garbage disposal has become a national issue – Faiszer
October 20, 2016 04:06 pm
Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Faiszer Musthapha today urged the people living within municipal council areas to provide their support to the government’s programme of segregating waste.
Municipal Councils in the country have decided to refrain from collecting garbage unless they are segregated from November 01, 2016.
We know the problems which have been created in society due to these mountains of garbage such as diseases, he said. “The disposal of waste has become a national issue.”
Our belief is that we will be able to provide an initial solution through this first step because dry garbage can be collected separately and provided to recycle businesses, Musthapha said.
He said that they believe this may reduce the garbage which is piling up at dumps by around 50-60%.
The minister said that today most countries in the world have achieved great progress through recycling and that, however, this goal cannot be achieved without changing the mentality of Sri Lankans.
