Arjuna slams SLC over ‘money first’ contracts

October 21, 2016   07:39 pm

Minister of Ports and Shipping Arjuna Ranatunga says that there is nothing wrong with President Maithripala Sirisena’s comments regarding the politicization of certain government agencies as it is his duty to correct any shortcomings.

With regard to the issue of the Bribery Commission, I do not see anything wrong with the President’s statement because if there are inadequacies in any institution he can take the initiative as the head of state, he said.

As the leader of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), he also has to safeguard his party, Ranatunga said. “Even I have several issues in the government. There are a lot more main culprits. They somehow manage to slip away.”

He stated that even if any current minister is caught for corruption, they should get the same punishment.

Responding to a question regarding the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) contract dispute with the players, the former World Cup winning captain said that he is against putting money first and signing contracts.

“When there are businessmen in the cricket board, money is always placed first and not the sport.” He said that cricket in Sri Lanka will completely fall before long and it cannot be helped that there are unnecessary individuals in the ‘good governance’ government.
