Five Indian nationals, who recently escaped from the Mirihana detention center, have been arrested near the Pesalai Beach in Mannar.

The suspects were preparing to illegally travel to India via sea route when they were arrested by Pesalai Police, acting on information received.

They will be produced before the Mannar Magistrate’s Court today (11).

Police launched a manhunt after six Indians, arrested in connection with the kidney transplant racket, escaped from the Mirihana detention center last Tuesday (8).

The special detention center in Mirihana, which is controlled by the Department of Immigration and Emigration, is used for detaining foreigners arrested in the country.

The suspects in question were arrested in connection with the ongoing investigation into organised organ harvesting racket involving patients and donors from neighbouring India.

Eight Indians have been arrested over the racket while 6 were found to have had their kidneys removed. They had been arrested on March 3 at Pennyquick Road in the south Colombo ward of Wellawatta for alleged visa overstays.
