A final decision has been made to hold the Local Government election with the new mixed system based on divisional system, the government announced Thursday.

State Minister Lakshman Yapa while speaking at a press conference held in Colombo asserted the election would be held in June next year.

“We appreciate the fact that MPs Vasudeva Nanayakkara and Dinesh Gunawardena have too agreed to hold the polls with the divisional system,” he said.

Yapa also dismissed claims by certain individuals that the next election would be held with the Proportional Representation system.

However, earlier Minister S.B. Dissanayake said the Central Committee of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has agreed to hold the local government election with the old system.
