Twenty-five persons including 2 Provincial Council members, who were arrested on charges of unlawful assembly, have been released on bail by the Negombo Magistrate’s Court.

Negombo Chief Magistrate Ruchira Weliwatta ordered each suspect released on a cash bail of Rs 10,000 and two personal bails of Rs 100,000 each.

UPFA Western Provincial Council members Lalantha Gunasekara and Ananda Harishchandra were among a group of three-wheeler drivers and bus drivers arrested engaging in a protest - disregarding a court - blocking the Colombo–Negombo main road and railway track near Galkanda on 2 December.

The protest was staged against the decision to increase the fine on several traffic violations.
