Driving licence to include driver’s will to donate their organs

A proposal by Minister Rajitha Senarathne to amend forms of obtaining and renewing driving licences by including a declaration to declare the will of drivers to donate their organs and to indicate that will on the driving licence card has been approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.

“With the development of science and technology, organ and tissue transplantation gives many benefits to patients. Living humans as well as brain dead or dead via circulatory death may donate organs if their willingness is declared earlier,” the proposal added.

Senarathne while speaking at a weekly press conference on Wednesday also dismissed allegation that the government had to agree to several terms that could be a disadvantage for war heroes in a bid to receive GSP+ concession back to the country.

“There were only three main facts; to protect human rights and good governance and to ensure the development process,” he said.
