The Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) should be given the authority whether or not to register a medical student who passing out from a university, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa says.

He expressed this view while speaking at a meeting held in Kurunegala.

Rajapaksa underlined the SLMC should be an independent body and no one should interfere into its affairs. “Or everyone would attempt to become doctors,” he said.

The former President also severely condemned the attack on the protesting medical students in Colombo.

“They wanted a discussion with the President because they got no one else to tell their grievances,” he added.
