UNP Parliamentarian Harshana Rajakaruna says that the Municipal Commissioner of Colombo has agreed to halt the disposal of garbage collected from Colombo at the waste site in Dompe.

Following the recent collapse of a section of the garbage dump in Meethotamulla, a decision had been taken to dispose of the garbage from Colombo at sites in Dompe, Wattala and Piliyanda.

However, the residents of these areas had resorted to protests on multiple occasions against this decision while protests were also planned to be held in these areas today (22).

Shops and businesses located in Kirindiwala were closed from morning as shop owners joined residents in the area to protest against dumping garbage in Dompe, Ada Derana reporter said.

Due to the prevailing situation, the Municipal Commissioner of Colombo and MP Harshana Rajakaruna held a special discussion with representatives from the area.

The Municipal Commission had then stated that garbage collected from Colombo would no longer be disposed at the site in Dompe.

Meanwhile a tense situation was reported during the protest staged by residents in Bopitiya, Wattala against the disposal of garbage there, as police attempted to disperse the crowd gathered. Several persons were reportedly wounded as a result of the clash.
