A building has reportedly collapsed in the Wellawatta area injuring more than 20 individuals, a short while ago.

Ada Derana reporter said that a building located near Savoy Cinema on Charlemont Road in Wellawatta had collapsed and that several persons have been injured.

At least 14 persons injured due to the building collapse have been admitted to the Kalubowila Hospital while another 7 have been admitted to the Colombo national Hospital.

It is also suspected that several people are trapped under the rubble while search operations are currently ongoing.

The fire brigade has deployed several fire trucks to the location while ambulances were seen transporting injured persons away from the scene.

According to reports, a section of a five-storey building under construction had collapsed on to the back end of a reception hall located in the area causing damage to that building.

Meanwhile the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) has also deployed a team of personnel to assist in the search operation.

Heavy traffic congestion has been reported in the area.
