Permission has been granted to review the petition submitted to the Court of Appeal in connection with the riots of 2012 at the Welikada Prison.

The petition was submitted requesting the Court to issue an order to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), to conduct a methodical investigation into the riots that took place in 2012 at the Welikada Prison, that resulted in the deaths of 22 individuals.

Accordingly, President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Rohini Walgama and Justice S. Thurairajah together made the decision today (02) to set the petition hearing for July 07, Ada Derana reporter said.

The two-judge panel also ordered the issuing of summons to the Attorney-General to make the prosecutor’s case on the scheduled date.

The petition was reportedly filed by an individual named Sudesh Chandimal who was an inmate at the Welikada Prison at the time of the incident.

The IGP, Commissioner-General of the Prison, the Criminal Investigation Department and the Attorney-General are among those named as the respondents to the petition.
