Three-wheeler falls into canal - 1 dead, 2 missing, 3 injured

An individual has been reported dead following a traffic accident in Mapakadawewa, Mahiyangana, Police say.

The accident occurred at around 10.20 pm yesterday (08), when two three-wheelers collided head-on and one fell into the Mahaweli Canal.

The deceased is said to be a 21-year-old female resident of Alliyadde Gedara, Karadagahamada.

Police stated that a 42-year-old male and 2 females who sustained injuries were admitted to the Meegahakivula Hospital, after which, two of them were transferred to the Badulla Base Hospital for further treatment, owing to the severity of their injuries.

Meanwhile, 2 children have been reported missing following the accident - a 7-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl.

Police affirmed that the search operations for the missing pair are currently ongoing.

11.08 am

The body of the missing 7-year-old boy has been recovered.

According to Police reports, the body was recovered from the Diyawana Lake in Saghabopura in the morning today (09).

04.28 pm

The body of the two-year-old girl, who was missing following the incident, has also been recovered.

Police said that the body was found this afternoon in the Diyawana Lake in Saghabopura around 7 kilometers away from the location  of the incident.
