Jewelry theft: another cop arrested

A sub inspector attached to the Kirulapone police has been arrested in connection with a jewelry theft, police confirmed on Monday. The cop was remanded until June 16 after being produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate.  


So far, a police Traffic OIC and four others were too arrested based on charges of the alleged theft. 


The suspects have been charged with stealing a stock of lightning conductors and gold jewelry worth Rs 550,000.


It is reported that the theft had occurred while the items, belonging to Western Provincial Council member Royce Fernando, were being transported to Colombo by two of his employees in order to be sold. Investigations had uncovered that the items were stolen by eight individuals including three police officers under the guise of searching the vehicle transporting them.
