Woman is in stable condition after first-ever heart transplant in SL

A woman who underwent a successful heart transplant is in stable condition and this was first heart transplant surgery ever performed in Sri Lanka.


A 34-year-old woman from Anuradhapura is the pioneer to be transplanted with a heart from a 24-year-old person who was declared brain-dead, according to hospital sources.


The woman is receiving further treatment at the Intensive Care Unit of the Kandy Teaching hospital.


A team of more than 20 consultants from six hospitals including Kandy, Peradeniya, Anuradhapura, Welisara Chest Hospital and Lady Ridgeway Hospital had involved in the hours long heart surgery.


Hospital sources added that other organs of the deceased including kidneys were too harvested.
