The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) expressed their displeasure over the appointment of Prof. Colvin Gunaratne as the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC), stating that he is a sympathizer of the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine and will act to prolong its existence.

Professor Colvin Gunaratne was appointed as the Chairman of Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC), yesterday (2).

He was appointed by Minister of Health and Indigenous Medicine Dr. Rajitha Senaratne.

Speaking to the media at a press briefing, media spokesperson for the GMOA Dr.Samantha Ananda stated that the GMOA is of the view that the appointment made by the Health Ministry is seen as a conflict of interest, as Prof. Gunaratne is an advocate of SAITM.

He also stated that the executive committee of the GMOA will convene to decide on the course of action that is to be taken in protest of the new SLMC chairman.

It has also been reported that members of the SLMC are to meet with Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Rajitha Senaratne today (3), upon a request made by the Minister of Health.
