The Tourist Information Desk of Kandy Railway Station which was engaged in a racket to sell train tickets to foreigners at exorbitant prices was temporarily closed today (11).
The action was taken following the complaints received by foreigners and a number of parties, said Railways General Manager S.M. Abeywickrama.
A report has been handed over to the Railways General Manager by the Disciplinary unit of the Sri Lanka Railway regarding the incident.
A worker attached to the Tourist Information Desk is allegedly buying tickets for express trains plying from Kandy to Colombo and Kandy to Badulla and selling them to foreign tourists at higher prices, reports have revealed.
It has been alleged that the employee sells a Rs.1, 000 ticket at Rs.3, 000.
The Information Counter was built in the Kandy Railway Station last April, and a resident in Ampitiya had got the opportunity to establish the counter following a tender process, Abeywickrama said.
