The Amarapura Maha Nikaya today urged the President, Prime Minister and the Government to consider only constitutional amendments rather than formulating a new Constitution.
Issuing a statement regarding the proposals contained in the Interim Report of the Constitutional Assembly’s Steering Committee, the Amarapura Mahā Sangha Sabhá stated that a just and peaceful society can be created in the country only by equally utilizing the existing statutory powers.
It further states that annulling the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which according to the statement was forced to the country and has caused confusion in state administration in Sri Lanka, would be a much timelier move than bringing a new Constitution, for which the government does not have a mandate.
The Amarapura Nikaya urged the Government led by the President and Premier to refrain from bringing forth a new Constitution which could cause problems to the country in the future and instead direct its attention towards only making necessary amendment o the existing Constitution.
