The Convener of the Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) Lahiru Weerasekara and Convener of the Inter University Bikku Federation (IUBF) Ven. Tampitiye Sugathananda Thero have been granted bail by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court.

They were ordered released on four personal bails of Rs 200,000 each by Colombo Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne, who also severely warned them to adhere to court orders in the future.

They were arrested for breaching court orders, forcibly entering the premises of the Ministry of Health and causing damage to public property during a protest organized by the IUSF on June 21.

A large number of university students, during a protest against SAITM, had forcibly entered the ministry premises and caused damages to public property.

During the unrest that broke out in the Ministry of Health premises, several students and police officers were injured and hospitalised.

The student union leaders were repeatedly further remanded by court as their bail applications were rejected.
