The Foreign Ministry of Ukraine has confirmed the death of a Ukrainian citizen because of a flood in Sri Lanka.

“The consul confirms the death of a Ukrainian because of a storm in Sri Lanka. Priority measures necessary in such circumstances are being taken,” the consular service department of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said on Twitter.

Earlier on this day Deutsche Welle reported Sri Lanka had been hit by the Ockhi storm, which resulted in a massive flood. According to the authorities, at the moment there is information about 26 dead. Among them there could be a citizen of Ukraine, who was washed away during the flood near the tourist city of Galle.

About 20,000 houses are damaged in the island, mainly in the western and southern coastal areas. Thousands of people have been evacuated from the disaster zone.
