The railway strike launched by 12 trade unions of the department of railways continues for the fourth day today (10) with little to no progress made following discussions with government officials.
It has been reported that members of the trade unions have not reported back for duty even though a gazette notification was issued declaring railways as an essential service.
Providing a statement to an Ada Derana correspondent, convener of the railway trade unions Lal Ariyaratne stated that the railway employees will continue their strike until the cabinet approves the demands made by them.
Meanwhile the railway control room stated that tickets will be refunded for those who purchased their railway tickets prior to the strike action. It has also been stated that several day-to-day activities including the transport of fuel to the Katunatake airport will continue as usual.
