The Department of Registration of Persons has established a special unit to provide National Identity Cards to over 300,000 voters without NIC’s who were not able to obtain an NIC as they could not produce a birth certificate or proof of residence.

The Commissioner General of the Department of Registration of Persons stated that over 1000 new NIC’s were provided to applicants hopeful of voting at the upcoming Local Government election.

Any person without a birth certificate or NIC has been requested to submit a letter signed by three relations, three members of the respective divisional secretariat bearing valid NIC’s along with an affidavit signed by a Grama Niladhari officer to the special unit established by the Department of Registration of Persons.

This special program was launched following discussions with the elections commission where it was decided that no one will be allowed to vote without a valid NIC.
