The Ministry of Law and Order has recommended to the National Police Commission to place DIG Nalaka de Silva on compulsory leave with immediate effect, to facilitate the ongoing investigations into allegations against him.
The ministry said that it has informed the National Police Commission of its recommendation.
The Director of the Terrorist Investigation Division (TID) was temporarily transferred to the Police IT Division on Monday (17), pending the completion of investigations.
DIG Nalaka de Silva has been linked to an alleged conspiracy to assassinate the President and the former Defence Secretary.
Investigations into these allegations against the DIG have been taken over by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
The CID has presented a preliminary report on the investigations so far to the Ministry of Law and Order, which has made the recommendation to send the DIG on compulsory leave based on that report.
During a press conference held in Kandy last week, a social activist had revealed to the media certain audio recordings of alleged phone conversations between himself and the DIG.
The activist, Namal Kumara, a director of the ‘Dhushana Virodi Balakaya’ (Anti-Corruption Force) played some of the recordings of their phone conversations to the media.
During the conversations, both individuals conspire to tarnish the image of several high-ranking police officers and also other conspiracies within the government.
The organisation also claims to have uncovered an alleged conspiracy to assassinate President Maithripala Sirisena and former Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.
The organization filed a complaint at the Police Commission regarding the alleged conspiracy.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had also called for a full report from the IGP on the investigation.
