The overseas travel ban imposed on former Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena, who is charged over the alleged illegal acquisition of assets, has been temporarily lifted by the Colombo High Court.

Presenting submissions at the hearing through a motion, the attorney representing the former Minister informed the court today (19) that his client is supposed to travel to Norway, to attend a workshop on the Norwegian governing system.

He further informed that his client needs to travel to Italy for a personal visit and sought an order lifting travel ban currently imposed on his client from September 30 to October 16.

Accordingly, Colombo High Court Judge Sampath Wijeyratne ordered to release the passport of Rohitha Abeygunawardena on a bail bond of Rs 1 million and to lift the travel ban imposed on him.

The Bribery Commission had filed a case against MP Rohitha Gunawardena for violating the Bribery Act by allegedly illegally acquiring Rs 41.2 million while serving as a minister from 2004 to 2006.
