The appeal filed by Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero, challenging his 6-years prison sentence, will be taken up for consideration on September 28 before the Supreme Court.

The appeal was taken up before a three-judge bench, comprising Supreme Court Justices Prasanna Jayawardena, Vijith Malalgoda and L.T.B. Dehideniya today (20).

The court stated that the request for an appeal will be taken up on September 28 for the confirmation of submissions.

The Attorney General had filed the case against Gnanasara Thero following a complaint submitted to the Appeals Court by the former Homagama Magistrate and current Colombo Chief Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake.

Former Homagama Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake had filed the complaint against the General Secretary of the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) organisation Ven. Gnanasara Thero for threatening Sandya Ekneligoda, the wife of missing journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda within the Homagama court premises.

Following a lengthy hearing, the Court of Appeal convicted Ven. Gnanasara Thero for the charges against him and sentenced by the Appeal Court to 19 years of rigorous imprisonment, to be completed within 6 years.

Subsequently, Ven. Gnanasara Thero had made a request for an appeal challenging the verdict of his case, which was then rejected by the Court of Appeal.

The request for an appeal seeking the acquittal of Ven. Gnanasara Thero of all charges against him has been presented to the Supreme Court.
